    • This weekend: Paid In Full!

    • byhydro on22 Sep 09
    • Dear Colorado,

This Saturday, the 26th of September, marks our third event at STARZ, and what I believe will be our best tournament yet: Paid In Full.

Hope you've been practicing! Actually.. I KNOW you've been practicing! Now it's time to step up and actually put it to use - when it counts. This isn't Danger Room, sitting in your boxers playing casuals online with your mom serving milk and cookies style. This isn't playing drunk with your boys after multiple rounds of drinks style. This isn't even meeting up at the spot and passing around a stick craigslist casual encounters style. None of that. Most people will tell you: nothing outside of a tournament really prepares you for a real tournament.

This Saturday, it's a real tournament.

This is ON THE RECORD, REAL LIFE, MONEY UP FOR GRABS, GUARANTEED POT BONUSES, YELLING IN AND/OR AROUND YOUR EAR, VIDEO CAMERA AKA YOUR SKILLS GOING UP ONLINE FOR THE WORLD TO SEE, BRAGGING RIGHTS, NO HOLDS BARRED, PLAYING AS CHEAP AS POSSIBLE, LOSER GOES HOME, WINNER BANGS THE PROM QUEEN, STYLE.

I’d also like to give a quick rundown of some upcoming out of state tournaments that you may be interested in attending:

West Coast Warzone (September 4-6, 2009) - A large tournament held in Irvine, California. This is a much talked about tournament due to Gootecks’ involvement in pitching it (drama, basically, something that’s easy enough to find with a quick search on shoryuken.com). Regardless, it has enough financial backing to make for a very nice event. Some of the highlights include HD monitors, fifteen hundred dollars in bonus pots, a location that is conveniently situated for tourney participants coming in by plane (the venue is across the street from an airport), and the fact that it is being held on Labor Day weekend.

Season’s Beatings 4 (October 16-18, 2009) - This tournament takes place in Columbus, Ohio. I know, "Ohio?" right? Well, this event has been building steam since Season’s Beatings 2 where Yipes and Jwong battled for supremacy in MvC2. In the end, Yipes took the title and the rest is history. This year’s event is shaping up nicely, especially with the recent announcement that Daigo Umehara will be traveling to Ohio to try for yet another U.S. SF4 major win. Will Justin be able to take him out this time? Evolution: Part Deux?!?! Only one way to find out.

Welcome to the first ever edition of the Extra Fresh League’s monthly newsletter! This month we go over the importance of new players, how to practice with a purpose, two promising gaming spots (one newly opened, and one currently re-inventing its image), and a few noteworthy upcoming out of state tournaments.

New blood—that's what most of the older Colorado fighting game players call them. There was a time where some of us, including myself, thought that the fighting game scene here was not going to survive/thrive any longer without it. 2005 through 2008 were probably the HARDEST years to play games here if you were trying to get good enough to compete on a national level. We had maybe four new consistent, contributing members to add in the WHOLE time span. I really would like to thank Capcom for giving us another chance to make the Colorado gaming community into the "BEAST STATUS" that it can be with a little hard work. I would also like to thank the most important part of the equation, the new players themselves. Without the Dres, Foxes, Sticks, Roogles, and Recons, I really don't know what path the community would be headed on right now. Actually, I'm still not sure, but the new guys definitely make me more hopeful about it.

    • 5 Reasons You Should Buy Shadow Complex

    • 5 Reasons you should buy Shadow Complex:

      5. It’s 1200 points. That’s 15 Earth dollars. I wouldn’t even stop making fun of you for that much. It’s also about the price of two 3-piece meals at Popeyes (with two breasts and a wing, fries, and a strawberry soda). I know, it seems like you’re missing out on a lot by spending 15 earth bucks, but in exchange you’re getting hours of entertainment.

      4. Because I said so. I thought about making this higher on the list, but I’ll place it here. Listen, if you’re new, you might not know. If you’re an older member of the community, you deny it. Stop that, right now and heed these words: I. Am. Always. Right.

Shadow Complex is going to be fucking amazing. How do I know? Don’t worry about that. The reasons are inconsequential, supplementary knowledge. All that matters is that it WILL BE and I’M RIGHT. So, yeah. Buy the game because I said so.

      3. It’s got a hyper fast run. How many times have you been playing a game, any game, and thought to yourself, “Damn, I wish I could run faster.” Well, stop thinking it and start doing it. This guy can run fast. He can run so fast that he starts channeling the spirit of ninja and runs fast across water and up on ceilings and shit.

      2. Because a reviewer said this as if it was a bad thing, “To call Shadow Complex inspired by the Metroid series would be a terrible slander to the word "inspiration." It's not so much that the developer, Chair, looked to Super Metroid for ideas as it is that they took a sheet of wax paper and did a rubbing of Samus Aran's entire career.”

I’m sorry? Are we living in a world where Super Metroid is NOT one of the best videogames ever created? In an industry where developers are content to copy horrible ideas ad nauseum, I, for one, am glad that somebody out there realizes that there is not, and can never be, enough Super Metroid style gameplay. Honestly, if you like these kinds of games you have been starving for years. The only thing you’ve had to play are the diminishing returns of the Castlevania: SotN clones that Koji Igarashi is churning out on the DS.

      1. Shadow Complex

Or any other video on youtube.

I will be checking every 360 I come across in this state. If this game is not on it, I’m wiping the hard drive as I will assume the only reason that you do not have it is lack of room. An empty hard drive will fix this problem quite nicely.
